Can I Remove Fluoride From My Drinking Water

Mineral Fluorite contains Fluoride

We get this question regularly: Is there a water filtration system that can remove fluoride from my city or municipal water?

You might not know that fluoride is naturally occurring in soil and rocks, so most water has some fluoride in it. Through fluoridation many municipalities add additional fluoride to their water supply to help prevent tooth decay.

Fluoridation, the act of adding fluoride to public water, is somewhat controversial. Opponents, including the Fluoride Action Network, raise many objections ranging from health and disease concerns, to the desire to abstain from medication on religious grounds. Although public and private health organizations support the addition of fluoride where the natural occurrence is below suggested levels, some people want to reduce the amounts they are exposed to.

Fluoride does not affect the appearance, taste or smell of water. Your community should notify you if the fluoride in your water exceeds 2 mg/l, which is double the federally mandated maximum level of 4 mg/l. Some water test kits will indicate the presence of fluoride, but getting an exact level can be difficult.

Typical water filtration does not reduce or remove fluoride from water. Many brands of bottled water contain fluoride, some with very high levels. Reverse osmosis (RO) water filtration is the most economical and reliable method to reduce the fluoride found in your household water. Reverse osmosis filtration systems can reduce fluoride levels by 90% or more.
